What is Women's Health Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists with experience in women’s health can help with bladder, bowel or pelvic floor concerns during or after pregnancy as well as treat for any musculoskeletal pain you may develop during and after. Our specialists can help you whether you are a woman experiencing bladder, bowel or pelvic floor concerns or if you are suffering from musculoskeletal pain during your pregnancy or as a new mum.

Common issues experienced are loss of pelvic floor control, symphysis pubis pain, sacroiliac pain, sciatica pain, rectus diastasis (splitting of abdomen), carpal tunnel syndrome (pins and needles in the hands) and dequervains (pain around the big thumb joint).

  • Pelvic Floor Exercises
  • Abdominal muscle retraining following birth
  • Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Treatment to resolve any pain
  • Pilates for women’s health
  • Breast massage when breastfeeding – unblock milk ducts
  • Pregnancy massage
  • Scar Tissue massage after cesarean section birth

Physiotherapy for the pelvic floor is also about making your back muscles, abdominal muscles, diaphragm and hip muscles stronger in addition to the pelvic floor.  Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not just making your pelvic floor muscles stronger but also your abdominal muscles, back muscles, diaphragm and hip muscles stronger.  It also will look at your dietary habits and behavioural habits and retrain the body to allow it to work to its best form.

More relaxing in pregnancy causes more relaxing of the muscles and they can separate during pregnancy.  In approximately 30% of pregnant women the 2 rectus abdominis muscles can separate known as the diastasis rectus.  A way to feel is to place 2 fingers above your tummy button and do an abdominal curl – if the 2 fingers can fit into a gap between the abdominal muscles it would be worth seeing a physiotherapist to have a check.  AVOID doing abdominal crunches and planks if suspect you may have one as will make it worse.

Our London physiotherapists are experienced in massage to help get unblock the milk ducts when breast feeding relieving pain, stopping mastitis from developing and improving milk flow.

Are you pregnant or have given birth and looking for physiotherapy throughout the South of England? Our physiotherapists can come and see you at your home or at our clinic in London. Just contact us via phone, email or whatsapp.
