Physiotherapy consists of a variety of techniques, which originate from all over the globe. One of these techniques, which are becoming frequently used in the management of injuries and pain, is Acupuncture.

Originating from China, Acupuncture has been adapted for the West society and consists of traditional and trigger point needling.  Chinese medicine believes there are over 500 points in your body, which are associated with different organs.  When treated with traditional needling, you may feel a tingling or a dull ache when the needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points.

Traditional needling can be used to assist with headaches, migraines, chronic pain, joint pain such as osteoarthritis, post-operative pain, nausea and vomiting, allergies, fatigue, depression and anxiety, digestive disorders, infertility and menstrual disorders, and insomnia. The treatment normally lasts around 30 minutes.

Trigger point needling is used for releasing tight portions of muscles that cause radiating pain. These trigger points can often be addressed by massage and other physiotherapy techniques; however, this type of acupuncture allows deeper penetration of your muscles and treats those harder to release areas. The needles will remain in the muscle until the tension is released, which can be from 5 to 30 minutes.

As with any type of treatment, Acupuncture works most effectively when used alongside traditional Physiotherapy to provide all rounded treatment and rehabilitation. Ideally, a desirable outcome from Acupuncture when used alongside conventional physiotherapy methods may take around 3-6 sessions.

Most of our physios use Acupuncture when treating our patients and we can often arrange the first appointment within 24 hours at home, work or school.  Contact us today on 0207 884 0374 or email info@physiocomestoyou.com to book your first appointment.
