Sleep is essential for your child’s health and wellbeing and early establishment of good sleep patterns is a major contribution to development, learning and growth – both physical and emotional.
A child with a physical disability is more likely to have disturbed sleep as they might find it difficult to get comfortable at night. They may experience discomfort caused by muscle spasm, musculoskeletal deformities, and have difficulty changing position or breathing. A sleepless night can affect the whole family! Ensuring your child has a good sleep posture can help make them more comfortable at night and reduce the progression of skeletal deformities.
There are many different sleep systems available that provide night time positioning for your child. Some mould to the shape of your child, others use brackets and cushions to stop abnormal postures. A sleep system will provide support where it is needed to try and get a symmetrical posture whilst they are asleep. This can also help reduce pressure on joints and make your child more comfortable.
If you’re concerned about your child’s sleeping, our physiotherapists will be able to assess your child’s postural needs and recommend an appropriate sleep system and even organise a trial of the equipment. Contact us today on 0207 884 0374 or email us at info@physiocomestoyou.com.
