Older person’s physiotherapy, or geriatric physiotherapy, is a specialised branch focused on the unique needs of seniors. It addresses age-related conditions, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and mobility issues. Through tailored exercises and interventions, physiotherapists aim to enhance strength, balance, and overall functional abilities. This specialised care promotes independence and improves the quality of life for older individuals, enabling them to maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle in their later years.

Older Person’s Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapists are trained in creating programmes which will help to improve your strength, mobility and balance. As a result you will be less at risk of falling. They can come to you at home, care home, nursing home or in hospital. Occupational therapists can also assess your home environment to make any difficult daily activities easier.

Following a fracture or period in hospital our, therapists can see you at your home, care home, nursing home or in hospital to help you get going again as soon as possible.

The remarkable increase in longevity means that it is important more than ever to keep as good a quality of life for as long as possible. Physiotherapists are one of the health team that can help with keeping your quality of life. They can help keep people moving, preventing loss of strength, improving balance therefore reducing risk of falls and subsequent injuries / fractures. When people are unwell or hurt themselves they can quickly become immobile and physiotherapists are essential to getting you back on your feet and going again as quickly as possible.

Older person physiotherapy, also known as geriatric physiotherapy, is beneficial for seniors facing various health challenges. This specialized form of therapy is suitable for:

  • Individuals with Mobility Issues: Seniors experiencing difficulty in walking, balance problems, or reduced overall mobility can benefit from physiotherapy to improve their movement and independence.
  • Post-Surgery or Hospitalization: Older adults recovering from surgeries, hospital stays, or illnesses can receive physiotherapy to regain strength and function.
  • Chronic Pain Management: Seniors with chronic conditions like arthritis or osteoporosis can benefit from physiotherapy to alleviate pain and improve their quality of life.
  • Neurological Conditions: Physiotherapy can assist individuals with neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease or stroke survivors in improving mobility and managing their condition.
  • Falls Prevention: Older adults at risk of falls or those who have experienced a fall can benefit from physiotherapy to improve balance and reduce the risk of future accidents.
  • Osteoporosis Management: Physiotherapy can help individuals with osteoporosis in building bone density and improving posture to prevent fractures.
  • Rehabilitation after Joint Replacement: Seniors who have undergone joint replacement surgery can benefit from physiotherapy to regain strength, range of motion, and function in the replaced joint.
  • Managing Chronic Respiratory Conditions: Physiotherapy can assist seniors with conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in improving lung function and overall respiratory health.
  • Dementia or Cognitive Impairment: Physiotherapy can incorporate exercises and activities to improve mobility and function in individuals with cognitive impairments.
  • Improving Quality of Life: Older adults seeking to maintain or improve their overall well-being, manage pain, and stay active in their later years can benefit from geriatric physiotherapy.

It depends on your requirements but the rehab is likely to include one of or a combination of massage, manual therapy, exercises, advice, mobility practice, walking aid recommendations and acupuncture.
