What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy involves helping people to regain the ability to carry out activities that have purpose and meaning to them. The occupational therapist works with the client to improve their physical function in doing certain activities as well as working on the reasoning behind the activity. This then helps to regain and prevent further reduction in function. Ultimately occupational therapists work towards their clients regaining lives which are independent of requiring the help of others and lives that provide them with satisfaction and reward.

Some of the services our occupational therapists can offer include:

  • Home assessments including modifications such as rearranging furniture, building ramps, widening doorways, grab bars, special toilet seats, and other safety equipment to encourage peoples function to be their fullest
  • Wheelchair assessments
  • Splinting
  • Workstation assessments and ergonomics for business

An Occupational Therapist will analyse and assess a person’s (children and adults) activities of daily living at home, in hobbies and at work. From this they will be able to determine any barriers that are making these activities impossible or difficult to do. There are a number of reasons that activities of daily living can become difficult or impossible including:

  • Having had surgery
  • An injury
  • A neurological condition such as a stroke, head injury or cerebral palsy
  • Ageing
  • Conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

They will then help to make this activity no longer impossible or a lot easier by teaching strategies and ordering equipment that can assist such as computers, mobility aids and wheelchairs, shoe horns, non slip shower mats etc. They can also organise changes to an environment like fitting ramps or grab rails on the walls or by introducing a step.

Occupational therapy helps adults and children overcome any obstacles preventing them from being as independent as possible and therefore enhance their quality of life.
