What is Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy?
Baclofen is a drug used to help control muscle stiffness and spasms. It is usually taken orally but is much more effective if it is delivered directly into the fluid around the spinal cord – this is called intrathecal baclofen. Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy is also known as ITB Therapy.
Would my child benefit from ITB Therapy?
It is best to ask your neurology consultant and/or physiotherapist (if experienced with ITB Therapy) if your child may benefit from a referral to a multidisciplinary ITB Therapy team to assess your child. An implant would only be considered if your child’s spasms/stiffness was greatly impacting on their quality of life and no other intervention is suitable.
There is evidence that an ITB pump can help in the following areas:
- Improve sleep
- Improve comfort and ease of positioning
- Reduces stiffness, which may make all activities of daily living easier including transfers, ease of dressing, bathing and toileting.
- ITB Therapy could help your child become more independent in areas such as standing transfers, dressing, and bathing.
