The start of a New Year can be a great time to start as you mean to go on. If you want your child to achieve their maximum potential for the forthcoming year, here are 5 steps which will enable them to achieve their goals.

1. Reflection

Look back at the last year with your child and list their physiotherapy achievements. Ask them to reflect honestly and ask if they put in as much effort as they think they could have.

2. Moving Forward

Ask your child what they would like to improve this coming year. Help them to set 3 short-term goals (in the next month) and 3 long-term goals (in the next 6 months). Goals should be always be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Measurable, Timed. For example it may be that your child would like to be able to walk 10m without their walking aid in 6 months time.

3. Break It Down

Breaking the goal down into steps will help your child feel the task is achievable. For example in order for me to walk 10m unaided, I need to be able to stand on my own for more than 10s. First I would try walking 1m and then the following couple of weeks I can try 2m and so on.

4. Make A Plan

What does your family need to do in order to help your child accomplish their goal? Set a routine for when your child will carry out their programme and make space for them. A reward chart is also a great motivator!

5. Celebrate Accomplishments!

Once your child achieves their goals, provide positive reinforcement and acknowledge their hard work, perhaps giving them a treat. Start the ball rolling again by setting new goals and giving them that motivation that will help them reach their maximum potential.
